Outdoor upholstery decisions involve the cover fabric, thread, seams, closures, liner, fill, seat support, fastening, water path, cleaning method and replacement plan. A fabric swatch answers colour and texture questions; it does not describe how the complete cushion will perform, drain, dry or be replaced in the project’s operating conditions.

Specify the complete soft-part build-up
| Component | Identify | Check in the sample |
|---|---|---|
| Cover fabric | Fibre or material description, construction, colour code, finish, front and back, and applicable evidence. | Colour, texture, stretch, opacity, pattern direction and approved range. |
| Seams and thread | Thread, seam type, piping, corners and any exposed or concealed openings. | Appearance, pressure points, water path and repeated-removal handling. |
| Closure and liner | Zip or closure position, removable-cover method, inner liner and care restrictions. | Whether staff can remove, refit and identify parts without damage. |
| Fill | Layer build-up, density or support description, internal drainage route and drying instructions. | Comfort, recovery, edges, retained water and realistic drying under project conditions. |
| Base and fastening | Seat support, underside, ties, hook-and-loop or other retention, and replacement access. | Movement in use, trapped debris, water path and wear at contact points. |

Use the zone record to set evidence requirements
List direct sun, rain, humidity, salt deposits, wet users, pool splash, food and drink, cleaning chemicals, operating hours and available storage. Then request evidence for the exact fabric colour, finish, thread, cushion construction and use condition where relevant. If a project requires colourfastness, abrasion, flammability or another result, define the required standard and destination first, then verify that the submitted document covers the proposed component. Do not infer compliance from an unrelated swatch or company certificate.
Run a practical sample review
- Review fabric swatches in project light and record the selected code, direction and acceptable variation.
- Use a full cushion or representative build-up to assess comfort, recovery, seams, closure, fastening and interaction with the frame.
- Where wet use matters, agree a realistic wetting and drying review with the supplier and operations team; record conditions and observations.
- Have staff remove, carry, store and refit the sample using the proposed route.
- Check labels or references that distinguish seat, back, scatter and different furniture models.
Plan cleaning and storage as part of selection
Ask for approved cleaning products, prohibited chemicals or tools, stain-response instructions, cover-removal steps and drying guidance. Confirm where wet or cleaned cushions can drain and dry without being stacked while damp. Assign who moves them before rain or severe weather and where each zone’s set is stored.
Define replacement before ordering
Record the furniture model or drawing reference, cushion position, dimensions, fabric code, fill build-up, seam and piping details, fastening and production batch. Confirm whether covers, fills or complete cushions can be ordered separately, what minimums or lead conditions apply, and how later colour variation will be handled.
Information to send with the enquiry
- furniture list, cushion positions, quantities and drawings or dimensions;
- area-specific exposure, wet-use and cleaning conditions;
- comfort, appearance, pattern direction and removable-cover requirements;
- daily, rain-event and seasonal storage capacity and handling route;
- required samples, tests or destination documents;
- replacement expectations, project stage, destination and decision date.
